B42 performance tests — the most important facts at a glance

B42

B42 sports scientist Lasse Ahl gives an overview.

In a previous blog article, we already talked about the importance of performance tests in soccer. Back then, we were teasing the “Performance Testing” app feature. The B42 performance tests are now part of our app.

In the following, we will explain our intention, outline the implementation and present the individual test components.

SIMPLE BUT MEANINGFUL: THE INTENTION BEHIND THE PERFORMANCE TESTS

Regular performance reviews are a key factor in top-class sport throughout the year. However, recording the actual physical condition is also becoming increasingly important in amateur sports. Not least due to the wide range of technical options offered by fitness wearables and smartphone apps.

Our goal at B42 is to motivate as many athletes as possible for additional athletic training, outside of team training — for individual best performance and to protect against injuries.

Based on this resolution, we have developed our training programs and now also our performance tests. It was important to us that you neither need a highly complex test setup and several test supervisors nor much time to do so. Instead, you can easily and conveniently carry out the performance tests via smartphone or tablet.

Our intention behind the B42 performance tests was therefore not least to find the right compromise: between simple implementation on the one hand and the benefits of sports science on the other.

When designing the test series, we adhered to existing and sports scientifically recognized tests as far as possible. Based on this, we developed a special B42 scoring for the respective test parts.

By completing the performance tests, users can compare themselves with their team or within the age group and use the strengths and weaknesses profile to find a starting point for their own training at a glance.

Because nothing is worse than a performance test that doesn't help you with your training in the end.

TRAINING PLANNING IN JUST A FEW MINUTES

In our opinion, the added value for trainers is also immense. The organizational effort in advance (scheduling, getting measurement tools, etc.) is minimal and the results are immediately and clearly visible to trainers in the app. The coaching tool in the app then even enables individual training management by assigning specific training content based on the respective test results.

Since a one-time performance test is only a starting point, we naturally recommend repeating the test at another time in preparation (or during the season). In the best case, after targeted training. This gives coaches a better overall picture of the physical strengths and weaknesses of the entire team.

But that's not all: we visualize players' performance scores in a spider web display — similar to FIFA — and thus make the B42 score understandable at first glance.

THIS IS HOW YOU START YOUR PERSONAL PERFORMANCE TEST

How to carry out the individual performance tests is described in detail in the app. In the “Training” menu, you will find the “Performance Tests” submenu. By selecting this submenu, you will be taken to a view with the four test categories. By choosing one of the four test categories (strength, mobility, speed and endurance), you can see an overview of the individual exercises.

At the bottom of the view, you'll find two buttons. You can either start the performance test right away, or do a small warm-up beforehand.

In the strength and mobility test categories, the result of the respective exercise must be entered independently. In the strength category, either the repetitions per minute must be counted or the time taken. Whereas in the Mobility category, an entry must be made using a photo selection of the position reached. In the categories Speed and Endurance, our app records the results.

SOCCER-SPECIFIC AND RELIABLE: YOUR B42 PERFORMANCE TEST

As already mentioned, our B42 performance test is divided into four sub-areas: strength, mobility, speed and endurance. In this way, we map all components in our tests that you can train in the app. This has the advantage that the test result can have a direct influence on the choice of training. If, for example, you find that you have achieved an unsatisfactory result in the area of “endurance”, you can work specifically on this weak point by selecting the endurance program.

In the strength category, we have decided to increase lower-body, trunk and upper-body strength in order to be able to present a more detailed performance picture.

The B42 performance test therefore offers the options for more individual training planning, a direct review of your own performance (or the team's performance) and competition with your own team or community via the leaderboard.
