For all goalkeepers: the NUMBER ONE guide

Voluntarily letting yourself be shot in the face or completely wrapping yourself around the post during a rescue operation requires a good dose of courage. But to still celebrate yourself, you have to be insane — or a goalkeeper. And just for that dying breed of “positively crazy people”, the B42 training app has its own 6-week training program: NUMBER ONE.

Goal players: more than just the last resort

However, being a goalkeeper means more than being shot down from a short distance. Goalkeepers must now be strong players, be extremely fast, clever and intelligent in their game — and also in top shape.

It is therefore hardly surprising that goalkeepers' mileage has steadily increased over the past decade.

You can even go so far that modern keepers travel similar running distances to midfield “engines” of the seventies — even though player tracking was limited to observations and manual reproductions back then.

While goalkeeper icons such as Bodo Illgner, Peter Schmeichel, Claudio Taffarel and David Seaman ran two to three kilometers in the 1990s, the Bundesliga goalkeepers traveled an average of 5.5 km in the pre-corona season 2018/19.

The differences in the mileage of the various goalkeepers are not insignificant. On average, many goal players ran over 2,000 meters more per game than their colleagues.

At this point, it is perhaps important to mention that mileage is not an indicator of a goalkeeper's quality.

Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp also proves this. In the 2018/19 season and an average running distance of 4.65 km, the Frankfurt goal player achieved the second-worst score of the season.

However, the fact that he was one of the best in his profession this season is proven not only by the success of Frankfurter Eintracht, but also by the statistics.

With a”Prevented Expected Goal” - value (xG Prevented), i.e. the prevented expected goals, of 0.27, Trapp achieved the third-best score in the league - despite below-average mileage.

What actually makes for an above-average goalscorer?

To answer goalkeepers-specific comparative values, statistics are usually used, which are often not particularly representative.

The top figure is often still the “percentage of balls held” — that's all.

The problem: A keeper who parries three centrally shot balls has the same statistical values as a goalkeeper who won a spectacular one-on-one three times.

The “Prevented Expected Goals” are much more meaningful.

React quickly one-on-one

If a player runs towards the opponent's goal alone, the pressure on the attacker — but also the goalkeeper — grows.

For him or her, the question now is whether to come out or wait and see? Give room to play around or stay on the line and improve the angle for the attacker?

Should you now drop yourself depending on the situation in order to reach the greatest possible distance from the shooter when completing a deal or storm out in order to increase the pressure on attackers even more and thus force them to make mistakes?

Whether coming out or waiting, a certain amount of reactive speed is essential for both variants. This is the only way to keep the decision open for as long as possible and opt for the better one in the short term.

Take up the basic position quickly

Outstanding goalkeepers don't just stand in the goal, they dance. As a result, they are more responsive and also more successful — regardless of whether you have to prevent counterattacks or react to falsified long-range shots.

Quick, reactive foot attachments on the forefoot significantly shorten the gap between the typical goalkeepers “opening jumps” on the spot. This allows keepers to reach the basic position that the body needs for a reflex faster.

Play intelligently when playing high balls

Goalkeepers must control their penalty area without sparing others or themselves. However, it is not always advisable to storm out like a teutone gone wild. In many situations, it is important to keep cool: Keyword “game intelligence.”

For goalkeepers, however, it is also important to act courageously and safely with high balls in the penalty area as well as when running out. In addition to the right timing, the necessary speed and jumping power are an important requirement.

For all crazy goalkeepers: the NUMBER ONE guide

Jumping higher and farther, running faster and more agile and at the same time protecting yourself from shoulder and hip injuries is essential for goal players.

From now on, you can train on all of these important goalkeeper-specific skills with our 6-week training program specifically for the number one team.

How is the NUMBER ONE Guide structured?

Each week is divided into four training days. At the beginning of the week, you'll start with a session to improve your ground contact time. This is followed by a mobility workout and a strength session.

The week ends with another mobility training session.

What makes the “NUMBER ONE” guide different from the other programs?

The NUMBER ONE program is specifically tailored to the needs of goal players: in flexibility training, we therefore focus particularly on the shoulders and hips.

The reactive speed exercises for faster ground contact times also train the skills of goalkeepers, as they usually act from the forefoot and have to act quickly.
