German coaches are currently in high demand in the soccer world. The soccer instructors at the German school were more successful than ever before. In 2020, three German coaches were in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time: Hansi Flick (FC Bayern Munich), Thomas Tuchel (Paris St. Germain) and Julian Nagelsmann (RB Leipzig). After that, for the second time after 2013 (Jupp Heynckes and Jürgen Klopp), two German coaches met Tuchel and Flick in the final of the National Champions Cup. In 2021, Tuchel finally triumphed with FC Chelsea. After Klopp with FC Liverpool (2019) and Flick with Bayern (2020), a German soccer coach raised the handle pot for the third time in a row. But you're not born as a success coach. You can certainly be born with certain abilities. Becoming one of the best coaches in the world, however, requires hard work and a great deal of meticulousness. And, of course, it all starts with the appropriate education.
The basis for everything that may still be available at coaching stations is the C license. This is the first level of the German Football Association's licensing system. Before that, it is possible to complete the team leader's preliminary stage. This can also be completed with comparatively less time. Only after obtaining the C license does the wheat separate from the chaff, so to speak: For those of you who only plan to become youth trainers and train the youth areas in the local amateur club as a hobby, this first license level is sufficient. However, if you strive for higher things, the B-license comes into play. This second license level forms the basis for all higher level license levels. If you obtain the soccer trainer B license, you go in a more professional direction and become interesting for the higher-class clubs in your area. This is how you take the next step in your career. At the same time, you will get started in performance-oriented soccer, which is the basis for ambitious coaches.
To get started, you must first register with the respective national association to purchase the license. And the following documents must be presented in advance:
In addition, you must be a member of a DFB club and explain this and provide proof that you yourself played in a club owned by a FIFA member national association. Before starting the B-license courses, you should also have worked with the C-license for at least one year. If you have also reached the age of 16, training can begin. However, the B-soccer license is only issued when you reach the age of 19. Once you have the B-trainer's license in your pocket, you can open up a wide range of activities. From now on, you can play all amateur teams up to the fifth
supervise the division and all women's teams below the 2nd Bundesliga. In the junior sector, all junior teams with the exception of the Bundesliga and the Regional League as well as all junior teams below the B-Junior Bundesliga are open to you. You can also work as a DFB base trainer with the B-license.
Until the time comes, however, you will of course still have the training ahead of you. The DFB estimates the scope of the B-license at 120 learning units for the courses and an additional 20 learning units for the examination. Of these, 80 learning units are intended for basic knowledge and 40 learning units are intended for profile building. And all of this in three and a half weeks. Each learning unit is 45 minutes long. The soccer trainer B license is divided into three courses. The cost is at least 1000 euros. The goals of the training are to teach you the methodological tools. Another focus is planning, organizing and evaluating training and helping to shape the club environment. You will also be taught basic pedagogical-psychological knowledge. The training content summarized:
The content of the Trainer B license is divided into three components, or profiles:
basic knowledge
Profile 1: Juniors
Profile 2: Seniors

To learn the content described, you generally have two options to choose from. Depending on what suits you better, you can organize yourself online or gain knowledge through various courses. In the interactive version of so-called “blended learning,” you will be guided through tasks on the online campus during B-license training. This is comparable to distance learning with occasional face-to-face courses. Starting with the aptitude test, you will then complete a preliminary phase of around four weeks in your home club before continuing your education for a week at a sports university. According to this scheme, it continues until the examination phase, which once again takes place at the sports university of your national association. This is how you complete your B-license training alternately at the local club and at the respective sports school. This variant is more extensive in terms of time, but you always have time to internalize what you have learned and apply it directly. If you have less online learning or are under time pressure, you can of course also obtain the DIEF license without the “breaks” in your home club. As a result, the training is compressed and you can reach your goal faster. However, it may also make your head smoke faster and make it harder for you to absorb the content. The assessment of what suits you better is of course up to you. Detailed information on the respective options with or without online courses can be found on the website of your national association.
Which form of learning it will ultimately be for you is not decisive for your further career. The Klopps and Tuchels in this soccer world also started small and perhaps tormented themselves more, perhaps less, through their education. In any case, getting a B-license is the first step if you want to make it into professional soccer. But even if not, you can certainly deepen your knowledge of the sport extensively and pass on what you have learned to your players. They will thank you for it and perhaps one of your protégés - if not a knock out of you - will at least become a new strategist à la Toni Kroos.
