Trainer C license

Football is your great passion — and has been so for many years. But at some point, it becomes more and more difficult to keep up in active gaming: The pressure to perform is great and injuries can also slow you down. Especially for people who are interested in game tactics and working with people anyway, at some point the question will arise as to whether they should become coaches instead of continuing to stand on the pitch themselves. In doing so, you remain loyal to soccer - albeit in a different capacity. However, in order to actually be successful and get ahead, you need a Trainer C license at some point. This is the next step after the basic “soccer team leader” qualification and the first real license that you can obtain as a soccer coach. Here you can find out how it works, what it brings you and what you need for it:

TRAINER C LICENSE — WHAT IS THAT?

In Germany, the training system for soccer coaches has several levels that build on each other. The basic qualification “team leader” is at the very beginning of the career. The Trainer C license is the first, more professional level. Then there is the B license, the B+ license, the A license, the A+ license and finally you are a soccer teacher (Pro license). With a Trainer C license, you can train all amateur teams at district level.

WHAT DO YOU LEARN DURING THE TRAINING TO BECOME A C-TRAINER?

In general, you should learn to conduct age-appropriate and motivating training. This means that you should be able to plan exercises, carry them out with your team and evaluate them afterwards - all in such a way that it is perfectly tailored to your specific team and its current level of performance. Since you can supervise very different teams with a Trainer C license, there are different training profiles:

  1. Children and youth
  2. Youth and adults in the lower amateur sector
  3. Youth and goalkeepers
  4. goalkeepers and adults in the lower amateur range
  5. Leisure and health sports

The profiles, which focus on children and young people, are increasingly concerned with care, education and support. You learn how to correctly assess the level of development of children and to get the best out of them accordingly without overwhelming them. After training, you should be able to conduct training that is fun for the children, motivates them and continues to improve their performance.

In the youth and adult sector, Trainer C training is much more about focusing training on competition. So you learn a bit more about tactics and strategy in the various phases of competition preparation and then also in the competition itself. But here too, you should learn to motivate your players again and again in various situations and to solve problems.

The goalkeeper profiles are about the specific training structure for goalkeepers. For example, you will learn how to teach special techniques and strategies (for example when creating a free kick and building a wall) and how to carry out a video analysis.

The leisure and health sports profile is not designed for competitions. During Trainer C training, you will also learn many “soft skills” - such as how to work with recreational athletes and older people. You should also learn to organize activities for grassroots sport.

WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR THE TRAINER C LICENSE IN SOCCER?

The national associations in Germany take care of the Trainer C license for soccer coaches. There are a few requirements for applying:

You must have played soccer yourself in a club that belongs to a national association, which in turn belongs to FIFA (in our case, your home club must be a DFB member through a national association). In addition, you must also currently be a member of such an association. Only then can you complete Trainer C training. When applying for the Trainer C license, you must also declare in writing that you comply with the valid training regulations, the statutes and regulations of the DFB and your responsible national association.

To obtain the Trainer C license, you must be at least 16 years old and you must be fit for sport yourself. To prove this, you need a doctor's certificate that is no more than three months old. You must have completed at least nine hours of basic first aid training and be able to prove this. In addition, a curriculum vitae in tabular form including your sporting background and an extended police certificate of good conduct are required.

When you have all these submissions together, you can apply. The costs for the Trainer C license can vary greatly depending on the association. At the South Baden Football Association, for example, training costs a total of 300 euros, while at the Bavarian Football Association it costs over 700 euros.

HOW DOES TRAINER C TRAINING FOR SOCCER COACHES WORK?

The C-Trainer training comprises a total of 120 learning units. A learning unit is practically a lesson of 45 minutes. This means that the entire training takes around three weeks. However, there is always a break of one month between the individual courses. 30 learning units are basic knowledge, two 40 learning units are profile-specific content and the remaining ten learning units are exam preparation.

There are several ways you can organize your Trainer C training. You can do the courses in one go in person at the sports school of your national association, or decentrally at your home club. This makes sense, for example, if several members from the same club want to obtain the Trainer C license. However, the association must organise this separately and appoint a speaker from the national association.

In addition, it is also possible to complete the training in a blended learning format. The courses themselves are reduced somewhat and, in particular, theoretical content is taught online instead. The DFB has a special online learning environment for this purpose: the ONLINE CAMPUS. With this type of training, you are a bit more flexible because you can also study at home and allocate your time more freely.

WHAT DOES A TRAINER C LICENSE DO FOR ME?

If you want a coaching career, at some point you won't be able to avoid a Trainer C license. Otherwise, you will no longer be able to move up as a coach within your club and will not be able to train higher-class and older teams. The content is also helpful for your success as a trainer. And the more successful and professional you are, the more chances you have of attracting the attention of a scout from a large club who is specifically looking for coaching talent. And then the next step (in one year at the earliest) is the Trainer B license. It is therefore very beneficial to continue your education as early as possible in order to offer your own team the best possible training and preparation for the competition.
